Kilgarlin Center Suspends Admissions

April 5, 2009

In a troubling piece of news, the Kilgarlin Center for the Preservation of the Cultural Record, which is the library, archives, and digital preservation and conservation program at the University of Texas has suspended admissions to their conservation program for the next academic year.  This is a very difficult economy, and I can only hope that by taking the next year to undergo a review the program can solidify their offerings to produce a new generation of conservators.  Aside from training many in the recent generation of library and book conservators, the students make significant contributions UT’s School of Information and the broader university community, and I find it hard to believe that the university could let this program lie fallow for too long.

As an alumnus of the program, I can speak to the quality of the training
